A jury has ordered Sedgwick County to pay $272,000 to a man who broke a leg in an accident on a county road, finding that the lack of warning signs before a barricaded bridge made the county responsible for his injuries.

The Sedgwick County jury this week reached the verdict in favor of Jon Mayo, injured in a May 1984 motorcycle accident on 95th South near 127th East.

Mayo claimed the county created a dangerous condition by failing to warn westbound motorists on 95th South that the road was barricaded ahead.

Brad Prochaska, Mayo's attorney, said the county was required to place a "road closed ahead" sign one mile before the barricades and a "detour" sign 1,000 feet before the barricades. Mayo was riding behind another motorcyclist who slammed on his brakes to avoid running into the barricades, and Mayo hit him, Prochaska said.

The jury's verdict was exactly the amount Prochaska had asked for, he said. "It's good money for a broken leg," he said, but added that his client had to undergo three operations on the leg and suffers a permanent limp.
